How the game works

  1. Step 1

    Press play

The evidence reaches you in the order the detectives received it. Nothing arrives early, and nothing is held back to make you look slow.

  2. Step 2

    Work it while you listen

Read the evidence as it lands, post your read on the case board, and argue it out with everyone else working the same case.

  3. Step 3

Lock your verdict before the reveal

One lock per layer, and a lock stands. Then the reveal walks the case back through the evidence and shows what was there to be caught.

Edward Culshaw, Prescot, Lancashire, England, January 1784

In January 1784, Edward Culshaw, a house carpenter from Prescot in Lancashire, was found killed by a single pistol shot on the road running out of Liverpool. When the wound was examined, a small crushed scrap of paper was drawn out of it, the wad that had been packed down the barrel to seat the powder. Opened out, the scrap was printed newspaper with one ragged torn edge. That same evening a saddler named John Toms was taken up and searched, and a torn piece of paper was found in his pocket. You get the evidence in the order the investigators got it, and you lock in your reading before the reveal.
